Enough iPhone 5 rumors have built up again for another roundup. So let’s release the floodgates and get started.
Delays: Over at 9to5 Mac, Seth Weintraub reported late Thursday that the iPhone 5 — with a new, teardrop design — is having design and production issues and predicted that the phone launch will be delayed and possibly run shortages into next year.
iting unnamed Apple sources, Weintraub also said he’s heard the next iPhone packs a great camera and is “impossibly light,” but sturdier than its plastic-backed rivals.
Cases: CaseMate caught the attention ofBoy Genius Report yesterday with a blink-and-you’ll-miss it gallery of iPhone 5 cases that seemed to show a thinner phone with an aluminum back. The pictures were taken down almost immediately.
In the meantime, the company has put up asaucy splash page in place of the “leaked” product page. “We’ll have your cases when you have your new iPhone,” the site reads, hedging on whether the phone will be a redesigned iPhone 5 or a upgraded iPhone 4S. Accidental leak or marketing ploy? You be the judge.
Release date, Sprint: Right now, all eyes are on Sprint for clues on launch timing.BGR reported that a memo that appeared to come from Sprint says that it’s issuing a company blackout on vacations in early October because of the “possibility of a major phone launch.” The network, which has not officially confirmed that it’s carrying the next iPhone, told investors Wednesday that its network is ready to take on the strain that could come with a device like the iPhone.
Sprint CFO Joe Euteneuer said in a callrecorded by Fierce Wireless that the company is committed to giving users a good network experience “irrespective of all rumors.” Another memo picked up by BGR, this time reportedly from Best Buy, seems to indicate that the company’s expecting to take Sprint iPhone 5 pre-orders in early October.
8MP camera: A photo that may, possibly, have been taken by the iPhone 5 by an Apple engineer on the company’s Cupertino, Calif. campus made the rounds last week. The picture — of lunchroom sushi — appeared to have been taken with a phone that had 8MP resolution, This is my nextreported. The picture’s (easily doctored) EXIF data indicated it had been taken with an iPhone 4, which has a 5MP sensor.
NFC...again?: Another persistent rumor about the next iPhone has been that it will have NFC — or near-field communications — technology that would make it easy to use as a virtual wallet. A report from the New York Times says that either the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 6 is likely to have the technology, which would reportedly be tied to users’ iTunes accounts.
